More than a thousand people waited outside the store, some in line for two days, to get their hands on the phone that went on sale at 8am.

Wow that's very interesting, to see iphone users in china and theirs a lot of them. Just shows that Apple is a company to be reckoned with.

BTW... It's funny 'cause the iPhone is actually built in China... and it's in one of the last country to be on sale :) ... But it's ok... :)

iPhone photo syncing

I have around 200 photos on my iPhone. iTunes believes I have one album with only two photos. If I choose to sync iTunes with my iPhone, it will erase all the pictures on my iPhone and replace them with the two it lists.

iTunes gives me no other options, they're grayed out.

How can I keep all the photos on my iPhone and sync them with iTunes?

I have always elected not to sync my photos, because it always erases them when I do. iTunes thinks "sync" means "erase"

It would help to know what OS you are on (Windows XP, Vista, 7, or OS X Tiger, Leopard, or Snow Leopard) - assuming you are using some flavor of Windows your iPhone shows up as a camera - navigate to "My Computer" - this depends on what version of Windows you are using, but there is always a "My Computer" section - at the least, click Start > Run type c: click ok and then click the UP arrow - down under "Scanners and Cameras" your iPhone will show up, double click on it, navigate to where your photos then select all, copy and move to your "Photo" directory (that you set in iTunes) it will then sync them back to your phone.

On a Mac I believe there is a similar process or you use iPhoto to import from your "camera" (iPhone) then you use iTunes to sync them back to the phone in proper directories/folders/albums.

You can automate the process on any of the OSes or by using your chosen photo software (if you don't have one, Google's Picasa is of course Free and great).

I just went to iTunes and checked for updates. It said 3.01 is available.
am downloading it now.

I'm assuming so, they state they notified Apple "weeks ago" so stands to reason they built it into 3.1 - I just checked developer site and there is no Beta 4 or any notice of one coming.

As serious as the exploit is, I suspect that as soon as they were able to create a patch for it, they would have issued the patch. So if they issued the 3.01 patch today, I doubt if the fix was available earlier. If they were able to patch 3.1 beta, they probably would have issued the 3.01 patch sooner.

Id say 3.01 is to fix that sms problem revealed. Installing 3.01 as I type. Release notes say that it's to fix the SMS vulnerability. this is only a security update/patch for the supposed sms hackh

The patch installed with no problems. It is OS 3.0.1 and took about 20
minutes.

I was there actually looking for audio/video cinoisute cables to hook my
iPhone up to the TV but they seem to be on back order and the headphone
jacks still only puts out audio over the Yellow and White of headjack to RCA
(unlike the iPod Classic that puts Video out on Red, Audio L on Yellow, and
Audio R on White).

The "fine print" says that this unit will not work with the iPhone, but will

The iPod is of course iconic and the iPhone has certainly made its impact on the market this year and will only continue to pick up steam in 2009, but really, an iPod/iPhone breathalyzer? All accessories have their uses and most will seem, if only to their target audience, to have worth, but who is the target audience here? problem drinkers who are also loyal Apple customers? Granted, the iBreath also serves as a FM Tuner--hopefully not while driving under the influence--and although it is designed to draw power from a user's iPod or iPhone, it can be powered by an included 12-volt cigarette adapter, so the product is not necessarily attached to Apple.

According to their product page the iBreath is: "This season's must-have accessory, that celebrities are clamoring for," and "Makes a great gift." Yeah, kind of like a gym membership or a brand new scale for your wife is a great gift.

Apple iPod Release Afterglow

Big news of this week was the release of the 2008 model year iPods .

While Apple fanboys/fangirls also found new software revisions to iTunes and the iPhone in their software update trays. Unfortunately, the launch hasn't been completely smooth, with iTunes 8 for Windows causing BSODs (Blue Screens of Death), requiring a quick revision to the revision and reports of some HD TV show downloads getting overwritten by the accompanying standard definition file (which I wish they'd give you the option to turn off--if I want HD, I just want that file). And there's been a mixed reaction to the Pandora-like Genius playlist creator, with some enjoying it and others wondering if Apple has hit the wall in innovation.

The reviews for iPhone 2.1 seem to be better, on the whole, with a mix of stabilization to the code and a couple of new satisfying features. For one thing, the tedious backup process has been shortened dramatically (I wonder if they turned on a switch to do incremental backups instead of full backups each time you synced). Ars Technica details some of the software updates--including additional info displays and, of course, the inclusion of on-the-fly Genius playlist creation (HardMac explains how this is done by syncing a database from iTunes)--while Macworld details some of the tweaks to settings.

Get ready to rock some more on October 14--that's the date that Daring Fireball's John Gruber says that sources tell him that new Mac hardware will get rolled out. The 9 to 5 Mac blog titillates further with a source telling them the event will be "all about the Brick." Say what?
Jason O'Grady over at The Apple Core suggest Apple should use some of its stockpiled profits to buy Pandora--which might be shuttered because of the cost of royalty payments to artists--and rebrand it as Genius Radio. I'd been a little resistant to Pandora at first, but I've been steadily increasing my usage of it lately (especially my Heaven 17 channel)
There's a bit of a kerfuffle brewing up in the gadgetosphere over the rejection of a podcasting app for the iPhone that was rejected by Apple as it duplicates iTunes functionality. As John Gruber notes over at Daring Fireball, this wouldn't be such a big deal if Apple's App Store wasn't the only point of legal distribution for applications, but it's stifling competition and innovation when Apple starts rejecting apps to protect its monopolistic hegemony. For all current jailbreakers (and those who want to free themselves of the long arm of Apple), the Pwnage Tool 2.1 has been released for the iPhone 2.1 software (via IntoMobile).
Grammar Girl is rather forgiving for Apple's technically incorrect usage of the word "funnest" in its iPod rollout event and subsequent branding (via TUAW).
Gizmodo wraps up the five best iPhone app releases of the week, which includes Air Sharing (free for the next 2 weeks, it enables you to transfer files from PC to iPhone to store in "disk mode," and Macenstein seconds its awesomness) and Real Soccer 2009, which I gleefully downloaded shortly after it was announced. The game's got pretty awesome graphics and good playability (though the onscreen directional pad makes it a little difficult to see the whole field from time to time), but I've got a bone to pick with the developers. As it starts up, Arsenal/Spanish international star Cesc Fabregas is splashed across the screen as Real Soccer's poster boy, yet he's not even included in the starting 11 for the Spanish team (recent winners of the European Championships), and there's something wonky going on with the substitution screen. Argh!
If you need to copy files back onto your PC from your iPod, the iPod Access software has been updated to work with iTunes 8 (via Macworld).
It looks like the new iPod touch is ripe for the VoiP picking (via Wired's Gadget Lab).
Another mention of TeleNav's upcoming turn-by-turn navigational software for GPS-enabled iPhones, this time from Forbes, noting that the app will "resemble the mapping features (TeleNav) developed for the Samsung Instinct."
I'm sorry, but this has to be one of the ugliest iPhone/iPod combo alarm clock/docks that I've seen. It reminds me of gadgets from the 80s that were trying to look like they were designed for the spaceships of the mid 21st century, which became dated very quickly (via Ubergizmo).

Apple: New iPods and iTunes

Apple event to roll out the latest iPods and iTunes software seemed rather subdued on 9 September 2008. There were some very interesting new features added (Genius automated playlist recommendations, shake to shuffle) and a mouthwateringly curvy iPod nano design refresh.

Let's get to the nitty gritty of new iPods.... If you just can't wait to see the new models, here's a page that pulls together the whole kittenkaboodle.

The whole lineup got refreshed to some degree, with the biggest overhaul happening with the iPod nano. As expected, after a couple of weeks of leaks, this year's model slims up after 2007's fatty model (check out the image at right of the nano evolution, courtesy of Gizmodo). But more than just a thinner profile, a rainbow spectrum of colors and a curvier design, the new iPod nano gets an accelerometer to switch the screen view from landscape to widescreen Cover Flow mode (when sitting on its side) as well as to enable the new shake-to-shuffle feature (something that Sony Ericsson has been dabbling with in phones like the W580i). It comes in silver, purple, blue, green, orange, yellow, pink, and black hues (seen below in an image captured by the folks over at iLounge), and in either 8 GB or 16 GB capacities.

The iPod touch also got a design refresh with a sleeker, more contoured metal body and the additions of integrated volume control buttons and a built-in speaker (in addition to the Wi-Fi networking, multi-touch, and accelerometer features of its predecessor). It also now comes with built-in Nike + iPod software, which enables you to track the miles you run with the Nike + iPod shoe sensor (see image below, via Engadget). Gizmodo has confirmed this new feature only works with the 2G iPod touch and not the iPhone or previous iPod touch. The iPod touch will come in 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB capacities.

It's officially been announced that the Canadian wireless carrier Rogers Wireless has signed a deal with Apple that will allow the iPhone to start appearing on Canadian shelves by the end of the 2008.

Rogers Wireless has been circling the oasis since the iPhone was initially announced, but it seems an agreement has finally been reached, though the details of the deal aren't yet public. According to the very brief statement released by Rogers Wireless:

We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year. We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned.

3G iPhone Rumors

This week's morsel of hope comes from the London Times, which reports that European operators are losing bundles on the current EDGE-y iPhone and the recent spate of price slashing is indeed an effort to clear inventory ahead of the 3G iPhone release. That's been pretty well speculated, but there are a few other eyebrow-raising tidbits:

Times Online understands that Apple has placed an order with its Asian suppliers to produce 200,000 of the new 3G iPhones by the end of May, rising to 2 million - 500,000 per week - in June.

Industry sources told Times Online that the device will have a "radically different" appearance to the current device, which has a 4.5 inch screen and slick, aluminium backing. Among the possibilities are flip version, which would enable the screen to be larger, and a sliding model with a regular qwerty keyboard - as opposed to a touchscreen one.

In other speculative news, AppleInsider reports that orders have been placed for aluminum shells for the newly redesigned 13-inch MacBook and that a manufacturer has been selected for the 3G chip that will be powering the new iPhone.
For Jailbreakers Only: If you've used one of the several available methods for unlocking your iPhone (such as Ziphone, as covered at Lifehacker), you can now install a native iPhone app version of Dope Wars, called iDope. This was one of my few gaming addictions on my Palm Treo, and it's certainly tempting me to try jailbreaking my iPhone. In other news, your unlocked iPhone can now do VoIP thanks to the Fring native application, which can do Skype voice calls as well as connect to chats using MSN, GTalk, Twitter, Yahoo!, and AIM.
If you use PayPal in Apple's Safari browser, you might need to switch browsers. Seems the company is planning to lock users out of browsers that don't have filters to stop phishing--including Safari, which does not support Extended Validation SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificates, issued to Web sites that have been vetted as legitimate. Perhaps you might want to try the new flavor of the Camino browser (which just got bumped up to version 1.6).
Wi-Fi guru Glenn Fleishman over at his new PC World blog suggests using Apple's Airport Express (recently upgraded to 802.11n) as an affordable way to extend your Wi-Fi network at home or in your office. Glenn also covers the Express as well as reviews the Time Capsule base station/backup solution over at the Seattle Times.

Is there any way to transfer a text file, say in Word, txt, rtf, or pdf from my MacBook to the iPhone, then pull it up and Email the document?

I used to do this on my Treo using Documents to Go.

Any suggestions, perhaps a different format (jpg, tiff, etc)?

I am interested in getting either an Iphone, a smart phone or a aircard for my laptop. I would prefer one of the first two but what they are capable of determines their fate. I need to be able to sign into stock trading websites such as etrade and scottrade and also bank websites. I want to make trades and check my bank accounts. Is the Iphone capable and if so, how secure is it? Are there good virus protection softwares for it?

Yea... I know the iPhone works with Wachovia Online Banking and the MFS Investment site as that’s what I use. I don’t know about others but being it works with the above I would think it should work with other sites.

The iPhones virus/security is kept up to date thru the software updates. It's now on 1.1.3 so if you buy one make sure you check for an update if you want the newest security updates.

iPhone and iTunes 7.6

Well, I upgraded my iTunes to 7.6 and made a mess if the iPhone. First thing I noticed was the device name, 'untitled playlist'. the iPhone would not sync with iTunes and the iPhone was full.

The solution was to go back to iTunes 7.5, get the older library file (back up), and rest set my iPhone. Now I'm in the process of installing the application on the iPhone (installer).

My iPhone is 1.1.1, may be that is way 7.6 will not work. Oh well. I'm just
going to have to wait then.

Anyone else had experiences with iTunes 7.6?

iPhone Cases & Screen Protectors

I use the screen protector from the Apple store. I used a similar screen for 2 years on my Treo, and both have worked well so far. There appears to be no diminution in the touch-sensitivity.

My case is a NiteIze leather holster-case that goes on my belt. Works well, comes in different sizes. The best part of the NiteIze is the clip which is extremely secure and it's actually difficult to get off. Before I discovered the NiteIze, I'd lost three cell phones when the holster came off unannounced and without my being aware of it.

Since September have dropped the iPhone once and that was only a foot or two. Nothing seems to have been harmed, even the surface. Frankly, I'm more worried about spilling coffee and such on it if a spill happens while it's sitting on the table or desk nearby. (Have the same concern with my MacBook.)

Saudi Arabian Author Says iPhone Debut Hit Them Hard

Mazen Al-Angary, writing for MyMac.com on Thursday, was surpised by the how hard the news of the Apple iPhone hit in his country. The buzz was enormous, and the reaction was so strong in the Saudi newspapers that, "It eclipsed all the bloodshed news we have been used to reading the last half century."

While many analysts in the U.S. are skeptical about how the Apple iPhone will sell here, Mr. Al-Angary expressed no doubts about Saudi Arabia: "If Apple isn't focusing on the Middle-east market, I will try to bring the situation into focus for them. When the iPhone hits our market, it will sell-out in less then a day. I would even bet it will sell before it appears in any showroom. Already one store is getting backorders on the night the Macworld Expo keynote took place."

In some detail, Mr. Al-Angary described the climate in Saudi Arabia, how it will be an iPod phenomenon there all over again, but even easier this time. With regard to the 3G wireless technology, not originally slated for the iPhone, the observation was: "[The] GSM Association isn't excited about 3G to begin with, and they are working hard enough to brush it under the carpet and bring 4G to the market before any one can even begin to get used to 3G GSM networks."

Even though the Apple iPhone won't be shipping, according to Apple, to Europe until 2007 4Q and Asia in 2008, Mr. Al-Angary's view, based on his home country experience, was that there is a harsh truth for the other mobile phone manufactuters: "You don't stand a chance, you have been (and I mean all of you) outsmarted and beaten..."
